Tranmere Rovers: The Quest for Glory

As you can probably guess I am managing Tranmere Rovers of League One which is my local team. Hopefully I can do better than our current manager John Barnes who is absolutely clueless. I am using the latest update from Crom on the SI forums so I will have a young squad with a couple of good players.

My aims for the first season are to:-
  • Gain Promotion to the Championship
  • Win the Johnstone Paint Trophy
  • Get to the 3rd round of the FA Cup

Ultimately I want to go on to win the Premier League and the Champions League. It will be difficult but I think I can do it.

Transfers

I was quite happy with the squad to start with so I only made 3 signings, all on frees. The first to arrive was James Sinclair at right back who used to play for Chelsea. I thought that he would push Shaleum Logan for a place in the side as well as being able to conver as a striker if needed.

My 2nd signing was a striker called Dmaon Gray. I'd never heard of him before so signing him was a big gamble but my new assistant manager Steven Sheen said he would be a quality signing. I think he will provide able backup tothe regulars like Ian Thomas Moore, Michael Ricketts and Terry Gornell.

3rd is a centre back, again who i've never heard of, called Nick Mulder. This was another reccomendation from the assistant manager so hopefully he will be good. He will be providing back up to the current centre backs we have at the club such as Ian Goodison, Marlon Broomes and Gavin Gunning.

Pre Season

Lincoln 0-2 Tranmere
Welshpool 0-3 Tranmere
Tranmere 0-0 Queens Park Rangers
Vauxhall 1-5 Tranmere
Tamworth 1-6 Tranmere
Torquay 1-5 Tranmere

What a brilliant pre season. The team are really gelling well as seen by the results as we only failed to win once and that was against a tough Championship side. Charlie Barnett and Ryan Fraughan really impressed me during pre season and will definitely be getting a few games throughout the course of the season. Marlon Broomes and Michael Ricketts look fit and ready to go for the new season which is great news as they will bring a lot of experience to the back 4.

Starting 11

-------------------------Daniels----------------------------

Sinclair---------Broomes-----------Goodison---------Cresswell

Shuker---------Welsh--------------Barnett----------Mahon

---------------Ricketts------------Gornell------------

Tranmere Rovers: The Quest for Glory
August 2008 Update

League One: Leeds 2-2 Tranmere - Fraughan, Thomas Moore
Carling Cup 1st Round: Tranmere 6-0 Accrington - Ricketts, Gornell 2, Edds 2, Goodison
League One: Bristol Rovers 1-1 Tranmere - Thomas Moore
League One: Tranmere 2-0 Hartlepool - Gunning, Welsh
Carling Cup 2nd Round: Burnley 2-1 Tranmere - Thomas Moore
League One: Tranmere 3-1 Colchester - Gray 2, Reid o.g

A very good month i'd say apart from 1 result. Was really happy to see us draw at Leeds who look like they will be title contenders at the end of the season. Ryan Fraughan getting on the scoresheet was a bonus, he looks like he can turn into a good player. We were superb against Accrington which I expected although I hadn't expected Gareth Edds to score two goals!!.

Bristol Rovers was very disappointing, we should have won but couldn't take our chances. Good win against Hartlepool which filled me with confidence for the Burnley game and we didn't disappoint. We took the Premiership side to the limit and it took an 89th minute goal for them to win it. Ended the month with a solid win against Colchester

Tranmere Rovers: The Quest for Glory
September 2008 Update

Johnstone Paint Trophy 1st Round: Port Vale 2-5 Tranmere - Gornell, Goodison, Gunning, Ricketts, Stockley o.g
League One: Tranmere 2-0 Millwall - Mahon, Cresswell
League One: Southampton 2-1 Tranmere - Gillett o.g
League One: Tranmere 4-1 Carlisle - Gornell 3, Murphy o.g
League One: Exeter 0-1 Tranmere - Sinclair

It seems my tactic has the knack of making sides score own goals, 3 in a single month! Again just the 1 disappointed result in the month with us losing to Southampton, didn't deserve anything from it. Was absolutely bricking it in the JPT game, Port Vale were 2-0 up at half time but the 3 G's and the big man got us back on track. There is also a big variety in the goalscorers which is really good to see We were immense against Carlisle, they just had no answer to us and we could have won about 8-0 against Millwall if it hadn't been for their keeper. Game of the month for me was Exeter, nice scrappy 1-0 win....LOVE IT!

Tranmere Rovers: The Quest for Glory
October 2008 Update

League One: Wycombe 1-2 Tranmere - Ricketts 2

Johnstone Paint Trophy 2nd Round: Crewe 2-2 Tranmere - Goodison, Gornell
6-7 on pens
Elding scored - Thomas-Moore scored
Billy Jones scored - Terry Gornell scored
Clayton Donaldson scored - Damon Gray scored
Byron Moore scored - Alan Mahon scored
Jason Jarrett scored - John Welsh scored
John Brayford scored - Charlie Barnett scored
Harry Worley missed - Gareth Edds scored

League One: Tranmere 3-0 Stockport - Ricketts, Shuker, Barnett
League One: Tranmere 3-3 MK Dons - Ricketts, Goodison, Barnett
League One: Leyton Orient 2-0 Tranmere
League One: Tranmere 3-0 Yeovil - Mahon, Gornell 2
League One: Huddersfield 0-1 Tranmere - Mahon

Another good month in my opinion although the Orient result was dire. We didn't deserve anything from that match to be honest and got what we deserved. Crewe gave us a right scare! Good job we practised those penalties in training, otherwise we would have been out of the cup. Was really happy to get 2 away wins in the League, any Tranmere fan knows that Tranmere and away wins don't go together so this was a great achievement in my mind. We continue to be solid at home which is pleasing and that MK Dons game was an absolute cracker! Chuffed to beat Huddersfield as well and put ne over on money grabbing Antony Kay

Tranmere Rovers: The Quest for Glory
November 2008 Update

League One: Tranmere 1-1 Norwich - Ricketts
Johnstone Paint Trophy North Quarter Final: Tranmere 3-0 Lincoln - Ricketts, Barnett, Thomas-Moore
FA Cup 1st Round: Tranmere 1-0 Histon - Jones
League One: Brentford 2-2 Tranmere - Gunning, Shuker
League One: Tranmere 3-1 Brighton - Gunning, Thomas-Moore 2
League One: Tranmere 2-2 Charlton - Ricketts, Shuker
FA Cup 2nd Round: Southampton 2-3 Tranmere - Gunning, Thomas-Moore 2

Pretty indifferent month with quite a few draws. The draw to Norwich s what we deserved against the top side. They will be difficult to beat this season for sure. Eased past Lincoln in the JPT and got Accrington in the semi....SCORE!. Could of had 6 against Histon but seeing as it was the youth team I don't really mind. It was great to see Gerwyn Jones getting on the scoresheet in his first ever game for Tranmere . The Brentford result was disappointed, we went there expecting a win and we just didn't perform like we should have. We eased past Brighton and then drew to a good Charlton side which is what I expected going into the 2 games. The bonus of the month was the second round of the FA Cup. Couldn't believe it at the end of the game, especially because the winning goal came in the 89th minute! Bring on the Arsenal in Round 3 at the Emirates

December 2008 Update

League One: Swindon 2-2 Tranmere - Thomas-Moore, Goodison
League One: Gillingham 1-2 Tranmere - Sinclair, Gunning
Johnstone Paint Trophy North Semi Final: Tranmere 3-0 Accrington - Mackreth, Mahon 2
League One: Tranmere 2-0 Oldham - Mahon 2
League One: Southend 2-1 Tranmere - Sinclair
League One: Tranmere 2-1 Walsall - Gunning, Fraughan

Decentish month for us. 3 good league wins in games which we played really well in. Its nice to see a range of scorers in the games this month as it means we don't rely on the strikers for goals. Was a bit disappointed with the Swindon result but it was no more than Swindon deserved. Cracking result against Accrington. Played half the youth team and they didn't disappoint, was great seeing Mackreth getting on the scoresheet. Poor Southend game, we just couldn't put the chances away. Emirates on the 3rd of next month for us, i'll be happy if we just get a goal to be honest, Arsenal are on fire in the Premier League.

Tranmere Rovers: The Quest for Glory
Last Day Of the Season

Here's the situation going into the last day of the season.

We need a favour from whoever Leeds are playing or whoever Southampton are playing and we need to win away at Walsall.

Looking at the fixtures I saw that Leeds are at home to 8th placed Carlisle and Southampton are at home to 2nd placed Millwall

00- All 3 games kick off
30- Southampton take the lead
30- Leeds take the lead
32- Carlisle equalise vs Leeds
35- 1-0 to us- Savage
42- Leeds make it 2-1
45- We score to make it 2-0 - Gornell
45+1- Millwall equalise vs Southampton
49- Southampton score to make it 2-1
70- We score, 3-0 -Gornell
71- Millwall equalise to make it 2-2
73- 4-0 to us- Goodison
75- Millwall score to make it 3-2 (GET IN!)
76- 5-0 to us - Gornell

Then on 90 minutes...this happens

Come on Millwall 2 minutes!! Hold on!

They've done it we are in the playoffs

Playoffs

Unfortunately we went out in the semi final to Brighton who went onto win Promotion.

Brighton 2-1 Tranmere - Ricketts
Tranmere 3-3 Brighton - Mahon 2, Savage
